The Hot Springs County High School Bobcat golf teams were granted a perfect day to play their Spring tournament last Wednesday. The event had been scheduled for Thursday, however, Mother Nature had teed up some heavy, wet snow for that day so the schedule was adjusted in order to get the event in before the clouds let loose. The powder blue skies and balmy spring temperature combined to make for a very pleasant day out of the classroom, for some very fortunate high schoolers. School – schmool. Let's play golf!
Seven area schools delivered teams to play at the Thermopolis Golf Course, and with the smaller number of players, play was steady and relatively relaxed – well, as relaxed as playing in a tournament can be. Commenting on the course conditions, Coach Brandon Deromedi said, "It was a great day weatherwise, and the course was in the best shape I think I have ever seen it this early in the season."
With a team score of 295, the Lady Cats ended the day at the top of the leader board with several members of the team putting up personal best type numbers. Maddison Shaeffer carded a 91 for a second place finish. Lilly Johnson shot a 97; Ruth Needham shot 107; and Reagan Huckfeldt shot a personal record of 109. Playing in her first year as a junior, Maile McCumber also fired a personal record at 110.
For the Bobcats: Senior standout Hayden Overfield finished second with a score of 75. Trevin Shaffer shot an 84, for a personal record; Jackson Coates shot 113, for his own personal record; and Mac McCumber fired a 122, for his personal record.
The Bobcats and Lady Cats will tee off in Powell on Friday, April 25, and will then play in Cody on May 2 as they gear up for the Spring Championships in Wright on May 9.
The JV and middle school teams will play an away, and then a home dual with their counterparts from Worland on April 28 and May 6 respectively.
