Lady Cat wrestlers headed to Riverton

The Lady Cats wrestling team had two meets scheduled last week, one at home and one on the road. Thursday night the Lady Cats took on Cody at home, and then traveled to Lander for the annual two-day tournament held at Lander Valley High School.

The Lady Cats had just three matches against Cody, and with skill and grit, they came away with two wins by pins. Outstanding sophomore Lilly Quintanilla continues to dominate her opponents, gaining a pin in the first period over Rakisits of Cody. Junior Alix Sorensen made quick work of her outing, with a 16 second, first period, pin over Cornell. Sophomore Ava Dafoe drew a tough assignment, having to face the number one ranked Hubbs. Although Ava came out hard, she gave up a single position in the first period, which cost her the match.

Illness led to just two Lady Cats being able to compete in Lander. Lilly Quintanilla again dominated her way into the Championship Match, where she met Price from Thunder Ridge, Idaho. Coach Travis McDermott said, “Price was a State Runner-Up last year in Idaho, but she still couldn’t keep up with Lilly’s speed and power. Lilly got the technical fall in the third period.”

Freshman Izzie Hetzel also drew a tough match, facing two time State Champion Mortensen of Pinedale. “Izzie kept coming at Mortensen, and came up just one point short of beating the number one ranked wrestler from Pinedale. Izzie continues to excel, and is becoming a force in the state.”

This week, the Lady Cats will be in Riverton to compete in the all class Ron Thon Tournament on Thursday and Friday.
