Bobcat wrestlers host Cody

The Hot Springs County High School Bobcat Wrestling Team were at home last Thursday night for a meet on Senior Night, against the visiting team from Cody. Dyllan Myers, Cannon Boren, and Brody Sorensen each came away with wins.

Commenting on the night, Coach Travis McDermott said: “We took some lumps against a very tough Cody team. While we had some exciting matches, we had a tough time chain wrestling against such a technical team.”

For Senior Night, Seniors, Brody Sorensen, Sam Skelton, Logan Dafoe, Lance Axtell, Colter Price, Ethan Yarrington, and Will Ward were each recognized for their efforts in competing as Bobcat Wrestlers. Also recognized for her much needed assistance as Team Manager was Senior, Talyah Myers. Said Coach” “I am really proud of our Seniors for putting in the time and effort. They work hard, and are great kids, who are always ready to wrestle anyone.”

On Friday and Saturday the team was on the road to compete at the tournament in Lander. With injuries and illness causing some short staffing issues, the team had just five wrestlers available for the Varsity, and only four able to go for the JV. “The Cats that were left wrestled hard, and continued to show moxie in a tough tournament.”

Cannon Boren placed Second to returning State Champion Smith of Cody. “Cannon continues to excel, and found some things that need work over the weekend.”

Dyllan Myers finished Third - knocking off the returning State Champion, and Number One ranked Brown of Big Piney. “Dyllan continues to gain confidence, and wrestles better every single week.”

“Sam Skelton continues to let it fly every time he steps on the mat, in probably the toughest weight class in the state. Sam is an exciting wrestler who is fun to watch, and continues to grow.”

Haeden Blair made it to the Quarter-Finals, winning a close two to one match. “The underweight Blair continues to work on his upper body techniques, and that makes for some exciting matches. Haeden lost in the Blood Round to end up in the top eight.”

“Mack Buckner is finding his way on the Varsity side, learning and becoming more mentally strong every week. Mack got a tough draw with the Number One Seed in the first round, so he had to battle all the way back, winning a couple on the back side.”

Focusing on the Junior Varsity Team, Coach says: “The JV kids had a long tournament in another gym, that really wore on the athletes. Tannen Birdsley came out with a Second Place finish. Tannen has come a long way, and continues to be a bright light with his attitude and effort.”

“Kacey Mackay also had a good weekend, getting to a Fourth Place finish, winning several matches. Kacey continues to work hard, and is making great strides as a wrestler.”

“Ryan Axtell had a long weekend - only getting two matches out of two days. Silas Dickey also continues to get better with every match, and always gives great attitude and effort.”

This week the Bobcats will be on the road in Riverton for the annual Ron Thon Memorial Tournament, which attracts all of the best wrestlers from around the state.
