Students have returned from their Christmas break this week, and the Hot Springs County High School Bobcats will be back in action for the winter sports season. The basketball and wrestling teams will be hard at it this weekend, with season championships in their sights.
After beginning their season with a 1 and 4 record, the Lady Cats basketball team, together with the Lady Wranglers of Shoshoni, will play host for the 2A Smackdown this weekend. Games will be played in Thermopolis and Shoshoni on Friday the 10th, and Saturday the 11th. Four teams from the 2A East will join 2A West teams from Shoshoni and Thermopolis, in this early year event. Both varsity and JV teams will compete in the event.
The Bobcats Basketball team got their season off to a great start in the opening weeks – going 3 and 1 against some very accomplished squads – and are currently ranked #2 (tied with Big Piney) among Class 2A teams. The Bobcats will travel to the north-east part of the state this week-end, for the boys side of the 2A Smackdown. Games will be played in Wright and Sundance on Friday and Saturday, and will have games for both varsity and JV teams.
The Bobcats and Lady Cats wrestling teams will also be in action this week-end, traveling to Douglas to compete in the annual Shane Shatto Memorial Tournament. The event is one of the largest tournaments each year in Wyoming – drawing over 25 teams last year. Next week, on the 16th, the Glenrock Herders will come to town for a Dual. Last year, the Bobcats overpowered the Herders in Douglas – with 60 team points to Glenrock’s 12 – winning all of their matches (save one) by pins.
While the Bobcats faithful always travel well, and no doubt some will be headed to Douglas or Wright/Sundance to root on the Cats, this could be a great weekend to stay in town, and enjoy some competitive basketball at Hot Springs County High School.
