The Lady Cats wrestlers kicked off their season in Cody last weekend. The Cody Girls Invite saw twenty-one teams come in, to begin the 2024-25 wrestling season.
The Lady Cats are, once again, a young team, albeit a team which gained a wealth of experience last year. Returning junior, Alix Sorensen, will again join forces with returning sophomores Lilly Quintanilla, Summer Galovich and Ava Dafoe. Freshman Izzy Hetzel will join her upper-class teammates in this year’s quest for championships.
The action in Cody on Friday saw the Lady Cats come away with a 13-1 combined record, which included thirteen pins. Coach, Travis McDermott said, “The ladies looked great, and they are wrestling at a high level. On Saturday we had three Lady Cats in the championship round, and brought home two of those first place finishes.”
“Nationally ranked sophomore Lilly Quintanilla commenced her new season in dominating form, pinning her way through the tournament and claiming not only the championship but also the Outstanding Wrestler Award for the tournament. Lilly continues to wow crowds and serious wrestling fans with her speed and wrestling acuity.”
Freshman Izzy Hetzel also kicked off her high school career in a dominating fashion - pinning three times to claim the title in her class. “Izzy is an exciting and skilled wrestler, and she made her presence in the state known right off the bat,” said coach McDermott.
Junior Alix Sorensen battled her way into her 3rd consecutive championship match. “Alix came up against a tough lady from Lockwood, whom she couldn’t quite figure out, but Alix is a force in the state, and will look to improve next weekend,” said coach McDermott.
Sophomore Summer Galovich also had a great day on Friday in a competitive weight class. “Summer went out 3 and 1 on Friday, in some really tough matches. As always, she brought intensity to every match, and just couldn’t quite capitalize on Saturday, against some defensive wrestlers,” said coach McDermott.
Sophomore Ava Dafoe is currently on the injured list and hopes to begin her campaign later in the season.
The Lady Cats will travel to Worland this weekend to compete in the Battle in the Big Horns Tournament. Pool matches will commence on Friday, with bracket matches set on Saturday.
