The Lady Cats varsity volleyball team traveled to Cowley last Friday to face off with the Lady Grizzlies of Rocky Mountain High School. Thermopolis had hoped to gain a little ground on the talented second place team.
Unfortunately, however, it was not to be. The Lady Cats lost the match in three straight games: 25-20, 25-22 and 25-10.
Coach Shannon Hill said, "We dropped the first game, but then lead most of game two. We missed a string of serves in that second game, and that allowed Rocky Mountain to move ahead. In game three, our passing was not crisp and accurate, and that really hurt our efforts."
On Saturday, the Lady Cats were at home for their season finale against the number three ranked team from Wright. Again, the Lady Cats went down in three games: 25-21, 25-17 and 25-12.
Commenting on the loss, coach Hill stated, "Wright is a really solid team, and we knew they would be tough. We played very competitively in the first game, and even though we were down in game two, the team fought back admirably to close the score."
The Lady Cats finished the regular season in third place in the 2A northwest quad, with a record of 12 and 15 overall, and 3 and 3 in the quad. Despite the rough week-end, the Lady Cats finished just one game back in the quad standings, behind Rocky Mountain and Greybull, who each were 4 and 2 in the quad.
The team will now travel to Lander on Friday, November 1 for the 2A Regional Tournament. The Lady Cats will first face Big Piney at 10 a.m., and will then play again at 4:30 p.m. Their opponent will be determined by what transpires in the morning games, but will likely be against Greybull, whom the Lady Cats defeated earlier this season.
Thermopolis will need to come away with two wins at regionals to earn a berth to compete at state November 7-9. The state championships will be held in Casper.
