Hot Springs County Clerk of District Court, two year unexpired term. Kris McNeff was appointed and she is now running for election. She was present at the candidate forum.

Kris McNeff.

Good evening. My name is Kris McNeff, and I’m asking you to vote for me for the Clerk of  District Court. I grew up in Thermopolis, where I met my husband Cecil. We’ve been married for 36 years and had two wonderful children here.

I have approximately 20 years experience in the legal world. I was appointed District Clerk last year after Terri Cornella retired. I am very grateful to her for her experience and wisdom. A wise person recently said it’s important to stand for something not just against. Therefore, I’m grateful to the Farm Bureau Federation and Chamber and Commerce for sponsoring tonight and giving me an opportunity to share with you what I stand for. I stand first and foremost for confidentiality. I work very hard to make sure that confidential information remains confidential. Further, I’m not the type of person you have to worry about discussing your case or anyone else’s case outside of the office.

Many people tell me they have no clue what we do at District Court. Well, in addition to processing child support payments, we also process and maintain the records for many different kinds of cases. Such as, felony criminal cases, lawsuits over $50,000, divorces, child custody, paternity cases, titles, name changes, guardianship, conservatorship, juvenile appearances, adoptions, probate, and much, much more.

Our job can be difficult because people often come to us for answers. We aren’t allowed to give legal advice. However, we are allowed to give out legal information. That’s why I stand for trying to help you understand the rules of the game. I can try to explain the process to you and I can answer general questions. I present options. But I can’t strategize for you nor can I interpret the law for you.

Finally, I stand for trying to be a calm in the storm. We see people all the time who are angry or frustrated or scared. We try to be a calm presence. We aren’t firefighters. We can’t go out and fight for you. We are more like the promise of  fall, a reminder that cooler temperatures and moisture are hopefully on the way. Thank you for listening to what I stand for.
