TMS named Blue Ribbon School

On Monday, September 23, Hot Springs County School District #1 Superintendent Dustin Hunt made a surprise announcement to the Thermopolis Middle School (TMS) students and staff at the Bill Malloy Auditorium that the U.S. Department of Education recognized them as one of the 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools.

The Department of Education recognized 356 schools as the 2024 cohort of the National Blue Ribbon Schools, including three schools in Wyoming. This prestigious recognition highlights schools that excel in academic performance or make significant strides in closing achievement gaps among different student groups.

Along with TMS, Parkside Elementary School in Powell and Sagebrush Elementary School in Sheridan.

"The National Blue Ribbon Schools Award is a testament to the exceptional achievements of students and educators at each of these schools," stated U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. "The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools are raising the bar for our nation's students, serving as models for effective teaching and intentional collaboration in their schools and communities. As we celebrate their achievements, let us look to these schools for inspiration as we champion education as the foundation of a brighter future for every child."

A National Blue Ribbon School award flag displayed in a school's entryway or on a flagpole is a widely recognized emblem of exceptional teaching and learning. These schools serve as models of effective and innovative practices for educators across the nation. The Department recognizes all schools based on student performance data including assessment results, student subgroup performance and graduation rates.

Schools are recognized in both or either of two performance categories:

•Exemplary High Performing Schools: These schools are among the top performers in their state as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.

•Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools: These schools excel in narrowing achievement gaps between different student groups and the overall student body.

Each nominated school submits a comprehensive application detailing its school culture, programs, assessments, instructional practices, professional development, leadership, family, and community involvement.

Up to 420 schools may be nominated each year. The Department invites nominations for the National Blue Ribbon Schools award from the top education officials in all states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and the Bureau of Indian Education. Private schools are nominated by the Council for American Private Education.

At the auditorium, Superintendent Dustin Hunt spoke to the Thermopolis Middle School students and staff about their achievements. Hunt said, "This has never happened before, and I could not be more proud of the efforts of the students and staff. And I want to talk a little bit about the legacy of learning that you've all created in your community. Today, I want to take a moment to reflect on the remarkable history of learning and Thermopolis, with a special focus on this middle school. For many of you, hearing the idea of TMS being anything but a premier middle school may seem distant if not imaginable yet, it's important to acknowledge that through the hard work of its dedicated staff, and passionate students, the legacy of TMS has truly transformed over the years."

Hunt continued and said, "TMS is a shining example of excellence. The school embodies the principle of learning is our fundamental purpose. We carry this commitment in every corner of our school, whether it's in the classroom, on the athletic field, or in community service projects. Our physical education programs model engagement, health, and FFA programs are a powerhouse of opportunity and growth. TMS excels in our academics, but also in our sports and activities, fostering well-rounded individuals who are ready to take on our world."

Hunt added, "The impact of your hard work hasn't gone unnoticed all year. TMS has become a point of study for educators across our nation and institutions... You've earned prestigious recognitions, including being named an International Model Professional Learning Community... and last year. You all know the U.S. News and World Report, the number one recognized middle school in the state of Wyoming."

Hunt also said, "TMS is one of only three schools that will be recognized in Wyoming this year as a Blue Ribbon one. That's just simply amazing. To say I'm proud would be an understatement. Students, teachers, staff, parents, TMS, I take my hat off to you. Your excellence is not just a testament to your hard work. It's a legacy that will forever enrich our community. This award belongs to you, but it's also a reflection of the community that supports us. Together, you created something extraordinary. In closing, I am proud to be part of this journey. I'm proud to be a Bobcat. Proud to call the Bobcat community home. Congratulations to TMS. Let's continue to shine bright and go Bobcats."

Thermopolis Middle School Principal Darren Luebbe also spoke to the students and staff. He asked all the staff of TMS stand to be recognized for their hard work and involvement in contributing to the achievement of being a Blue Ribbon School.

Lubbe continued and said, "Today I stand here before you with pride and excitement as we celebrate an incredible achievement. Congratulations to each one of you for being in the International Blue Ribbon School. This recognition is a testament to your hard work, dedication, and passion that each of you brings to school every day. Being recognized in the past year as the number one middle school in the state of Wyoming, and now a National Blue Ribbon School is no small feat."

Luebbe added, "It reflects not just your academic achievements but also your kindness, respect and support you've shown one another. You've worked tirelessly pushing your boundaries and faced challenges with courage. This award is a recognition of your collective efforts and determination to be the best you can be. It's something we preach every day at TMS. It's to work hard and do everything to the best of your ability and prove that through that you can achieve greatness."

Principal Luebbe continued to address the students about their future and how each of them are a quill or a pen that wrote their own story. He said, "At TMS, we've written a story of greatness and excellence, and that shows with your awards of recognition that the building and Hot Springs County has achieved...And the staff here is helping guide you along the way. As you write your individual stories, TMS is also helping you write that story as you progressed through school and in high school from the elementary before you. I guess the thing I'm trying to convey to you is because we've achieved this, doesn't mean the story is over. We are very close to this book. It's just a chapter in all of our story and the story of humans. And as we continue for each of us, staff members and students alike, we're going to write the next chapter."
