The Lady Cats played host last weekend to one-half of the Western Wyoming Volleyball Challenge Tournament. This newly formed tournament saw 1A and 2A teams from all over the state compete at two venues, Thermopolis and Greybull.
Playing at home on September 20, the Lady Cats faced off against 2A Big Piney in the opening round of the tournament, and came away with a 2 to 1 win (24-25, 25-9, and 15-7). Then came the number 4 ranked 2A team from Riverside. Although the ladies battled in each game, Riverside came out on top 2 to 0 (25-22 and 25-18). The day ended with a 2 to 0 loss to perennial 1A competitor, Little Snake River (25-17 and 25-13).
Saturday’s contests found the Lady Cats gaining significant wins against Kemmerer (2 to 1), and against Wind River (2 to 0). At week’s end, the Lady Cats sit in second place in the conference, with an 8 and 9 record, overall.
Commenting on the tournament, coach Shannon Hill stated, “Our defense was off last week-end, and we will focus on that in practice this week. We will see many of those teams again at regionals, so this experience will help us to be better prepared.”
This week, the Lady Cats will commence with conference play – facing Shoshoni (6-11-1) at home on Friday, September 27. The team will then play away, at Greybull (11-9-3), on Saturday, September 28. Greybull, currently, sits atop the Conference.
Coach Hill said, “Those are both good teams, but we have the ability to play well against them, and certainly, we have a chance to come away with wins in each of those contests.”
