Cross country team faces tough competition in Lander

The Hot Springs County High School Cross Country Team traveled to Lander on Thursday, September 19 to compete in the Lander Invitational Meet. Teams from sixteen schools were in attendance to take on a new course laid out in Lander.

While the new course did away with the dreaded hill of the previous lay out, it also added an even tougher hill – which hardly seems cricket. But, as Coach, Stephanie Metz, says: “That’s cross-country running.”

Senior, Trajn Swalstad of Worland won the boys race, running a time of 16:21.90. Kelly Walsh won the boys team event.

The Cats had six runners entered. Junior, Jadeth Elder, finished in 24th place with a time of 18:52.55. Junior, Cole Keller, ran 19:55.29; freshman, Ammon Gevas, ran 19:56.57; sophomore, Teancum Gevas, ran 21:40.36; freshman, Clayton Keller, ran 22:46.60; and sophomore, Alec Martinez, had a time of 26:01.39.

Said Coach Metz: “That hill was tough. It affected all of our runners. Ammon Gevas, probably, recovered the quickest from the hill, and he had a great run.”

This week, the young Bobcats team will compete at Worland on Thursday, September 26, 2024, and will see many of the same tough competitors from Class 3A schools.
