Bobcat golfers bring home trophies from state

The Bobcat boys and girls golf teams were in Sheridan last weekend to compete in the State 2A Golf Championships. The tournament was played over two days, Friday and Saturday, at the Kendrick Golf Course. Kendrick is a public course - comprising 18 holes, with a par of 72.

The boys brought home a State Championship, the girls came in as runner up State Champions and senior Hayden Overfield was the 2A individual boys State Champion.

Outstanding senior, Hayden Overfield, finished the tournament as State Champion – with rounds of 82 and 78 (160). Two players – from Kemmerer and Tongue River, respectively – finished tied for second place, at just one stroke back. The competition was extremely close – with the top four boys being separated by just 3 strokes.

Commenting on the win, coach Brandon Deromedi, stated, "Hayden Overfield is a senior this year, and he is mature beyond his years. He is a leader on this team, and at everything to which he applies himself. He works hard at his game, and is very coachable. At the end of day one, he was down 5 strokes, but he never let that affect his play, and finished day two with the championship."

Led by their senior member, the Bobcats finished as State Champions in the boys division, with a combined score of 722 – 14 strokes better than second place finisher, Kemmerer. Putting on an exceptional performance, the Cats had two players in the top 10 – with all five of their team finishing in the top 16.

Freshman, Trevin Shaffer, finished in 7th place, at 180; sophomore, Ty Simeral, placed 12th, shooting a 188; junior, Ian Locke, finished in 15th place, at 195 and sophomore, Hayden Johnson, came in 16th place, carding a 197.

Last year, the Lady Cats played to a State Championship in Newcastle – the first for the Lady Cats since 2008. While playing equally well this year, the ladies were pitted against the freshman phenom from Kemmerer – Tazlyn Wagner. Wagner was the Girls State Champion – shooting a round one of 75; and then falling to a round two score of 78 - for a total of 153 for the tournament Class 2A State Record.

As a team, the Lady Cats placed three players in the top 10, and finished the tournament in second place (620) – behind only the team from Sundance (594). Lily Johnson finished tied for 4th place – shooting a 201; Madison Shaffer finished 6th at 205; Ruth Needham carded a 214 and ended the tournament in 9th place; Miriam Johnson shot 255, and Reagan Huckfeldt carded a 268.

With the two championship wins, Hot Springs County has now brought home six individual state golf championships, and six team state championships in the past seven years. Eleven state championships overall.

Coach Deromedi said, "I really take no credit for what these players can and have accomplished. I am so proud of all of them. They all diligently work at their game, and are always looking to improve. They really make it fun for me to be their cach."
