Lady Cats see tough competition at Big Horn Invite

The Hot Springs County High School Lady Cats varsity volleyball team was on the road in Sheridan last week to compete at the Big Horn Tournament. Thirteen 2A schools were in attendance at the event - which covered two days, and pitted the Lady Cats against some of the top teams in the division.

Before ever arriving to play at the tournament, the Lady Cats faced difficult odds. After an early 4 a.m. wake-up, the girls were early on the bus to Sheridan, and played their first match at 9 a.m. Over the course of the long Friday, the Lady Cats played back-to-back games - beginning with a 2-0 win against Moorcroft (25-18, 25-11).

The late afternoon brought tough games against the #5, #4 and #3 teams in Pine Bluffs, Wright and Tongue River, respectively. Each of those matches went to the opponents. The scores, however, were very close in each contest.

Saturday morning left the team with a very close loss to host, Big Horn High School. The Lady Cats then finished up the tournament with a 2-0 win against Sundance (25-16, 25-19).

The ladies will be very busy this week, playing host to Lovell on Tuesday night, and then co-hosting a split-tournament with Greybull on Friday and Saturday. As many as eight schools will compete in that event – mostly 2A schools, with a few 1A teams also making an appearance.

Commenting on the Big Horn Tournament, coach, Shannon Hill said, “We knew going in that we would face some good teams in Sheridan, and although we didn’t play as well as we might have hoped, the wins against Moorcroft and Sundance will help us to stay confident going forward.” As for this week’s competitions: “With the home court advantage, we should fare well, and should come away with some much needed wins.”
