Storm produces damaging winds, sparks wildfire

Following a wind event the tore through downtown Thermopolis on Monday afternoon, a lightning strike started a fire in the Warm Springs area southeast of Thermopolis.

The fire was reported around 3 p.m. Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department personnel quickly responded to the scene. The fire grew to a reported 1,600 acres as of Tuesday morning.

A statement released Tuesday morning from the fire department said they would continue working on the West Warm Springs Fire. Progress was made on the fire Monday night but the fire remained active as of Tuesday.

The fire is burning on public, private and state lands. Multiple county and federal engines have responded, along with a strong air attack that included SEATs, large air tankers and helicopters. Air attack and other firefighting efforts continue today.

Please be fire aware as you recreate this fall-fuels are very dry and any start has the potential to grow quickly. Do not park or drive on dry grass and remember that Stage 1 fire restrictions are still in effect in this area and throughout a large portion of the state

The wind generated from the severe thunderstorm traveled through downtown Thermopolis caused damage to multiple vehicles, buildings and roof tops along Broadway Street from the area of the railroad tracks west and through the stoplight.

As of Tuesday, a list of things they need included water, Gatorade, jerky, baby wipes, pudding cups and/or food for when they come in to have at the fire hall.
