The Hot Springs County High School Cross Country team opened their season with a warm-up at the Wyoming Invitational in Cheyenne last week. Teams from around the region – both in state, and out of state - were in attendance, to compete in a huge event, intended to get the season off to a roaring start. The Varsity girls event had 172 entrants, while the varsity boys had 218 competitors.
Coach Stephanie Metz has a very young team this year – with no seniors and just two juniors, two sophomores, and four freshman. “It’s definitely going to be a building year, but all of the team have experience running at either the high school, or at the middle school level. We have work to do, but we are excited to see how the season progresses,” said coach Metz.
Although coach Metz plans to have all of her runners compete in varsity this year, only the two junior runners were entered in the varsity competition at Cheyenne.
Jadeth Elder ran a time of 17:59.77 and finished 46th in the standings. Cole Keller ran 19:13.03, for a 100th place finish. With only two runners entered, the Bobcats did not qualify in the team standings for the mega-event.
This week, the Cats will travel to the Wyoming Indian School to meet up with some stiff competition.
Coach Metz said, “ We feel good about going into the Indian School event. It’s always good to see how we stack up against the better competitors in the state.”
