Duane Watkins

1935 -2024

Duane Watkin Watkins, 89, died August 27, 2024, at his home in Hot Springs County after a period of failing health.

One of two children, Duane was born March 18, 1935, in Grand Junction, Colo., the son of Thomas and Vivian (House) Watkins. The family moved to Laramie, Wyo., in 1966.

After high school Duane ranched for a while then was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. He married Rose Emma Voss on March 20, 1960, in Grand Junction, Colo. He graduated from the University of Wyoming where he was a Dairy Herdsman for the college dairy farm.

After teaching in Baggs, Wyo., for two years, the family moved to Thermopolis in 1970 where he taught for the Hot Springs County School District #1 for many years. During this time he became the National President for NVATA Teachers Association.

Duane was a member of the Shriners and lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. He enjoyed leather work, ranching, farming, wine making and preserving his farmed foods.

Those cherishing his memory include his daughters, Vivian Rigsby of Thorton, Colo., and Pam Watkins of Thermopolis; grandchildren, Meagan, Henry, Shanea, Sarah and Daisy; and great grandkids, Alyssia, Payton and Ashton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rose in 2020; son, Joe; and brother, Warren.

Graveside services will be held in the Highlands Cemetery in Meeker, Colo., on September 11, at 2 p.m.
