Honoring the American Flag

by Lara Love

On Friday, June 14 the 1890’s Riders, with the assistance of other community volunteers, will be putting up the Avenue of Flags at Monument Hill Cemetery in honor of Flag Day. We believe this is the first year the Flags have went up on this particular holiday.

A letter to the editor on this page gives a detailed history of Flag Day and its importance.

I fly a American Flag at my house daily, as do many others in this community and across this great country.

Surprisingly to me, occasionally when I tell people I proudly fly Old Glory, they ask if it is because I am a Trump supporter. What? I’m not easily offended but I’ll be honest, when asked that question, I am.

My reasons for flying the Flag have nothing to do with politics and everything to do with being a proud patriot! In case you don’t know what that is, its a person who loves their country and is ready to support and defend it. For me, flying the American Flag is not a political statement or a show of support of any politician.

If you are not one of the many Americans who fly the Flag daily at your house, consider putting one up on Friday to show support of your country and your Flag.

The raising of the Flags at Monument Hill will begin at 7 a.m. and they will be taken down at 5 p.m. There will be no memorial service and this is weather permitting.
