The Hot Springs County High School Golf Team was in Torrington last weekend to compete at the 2A Spring Championship Golf Tournament. Following up on their outstanding performance in the fall season, the Lady Cats once again came out on top.
The tournament covered two rounds for both the Bobcats and the Lady Cats, with each round being played at the Cottonwood at Torrington Golf Course. While the weather on day one was cold, gray and windy, conditions improved nicely on day two for the final round of the Tournament.
As Coach Brandon Deromedi had predicted, the course played tight - with heavily wooded and narrow fairways on the back nine. Although the conditions were varied, both the Bobcats and the Lady Cats played consistently throughout the event.
In a model of consistency, the Lady Cats shot team scores of 332 in both the first and second rounds of the tournament, for a total score of 664, good enough for a 1st place finish over second place Sunday with a 667.
Lilly Johnson finished in 2nd Place, with a score of 211 (104 and 107); Maggie Landon placed 5th at 224 (114 and 110); Maddison Shaffer came in 10th at 235 (120 and 115); Austin Slagle finished in 11th Place at 238 (114 and 124) and Dazlynn Hunt carded a 297 (149 and 148) for 21st place out of a field of 23.
Following on the heels of their teammates, the Bobcats finished in 3rd place with a score of 820 – just eleven strokes behind the 1st place team from Glenrock (809). After finishing eighth in the fall championship, the Bobcats made great strides to pull up five places in the spring tournament standings.
Hayden Overfield finished in 5th place, with a score of 167 (86 and 81); Hayden Johnson finished in 15th place, with a score of 205 (106 and 99); Ian Locke finished 23rd at 215 (106 and 109); Camden Weyer finished 30th at 233 (118 and 115) and Zerrian Stone carded a 251 (122 and 129) for 32nd place out of a field of 42.
Interviewed after the tournament, coach Deromedi commented, "I am really proud of the team. Each of the players has proved themselves as great competitors this year. Everyone improved in some way – be it in scoring, or in their approach to the challenge of the course. We are all looking forward to some good rounds this summer, and I anticipate very good things for the fall season."
