Golf team tunes up for state

The Hot Springs County High School golf team traveled to Hulett on Monday, April 29 and then to Cody, on Friday, May 3 to compete in the final tournaments of their regular spring season. Last week’s outings served as great opportunities for the Bobcats and Lady Cats to get prepared for the spring championship tournament being held in Torrington this week.

In Hulett, the Lady Cats finished second (306) in the team scoring at The Golf Club at Devils Tower, just six strokes back of the team from Sundance (300).

For the Lady Cats, Lilly Johnson shot a 99 to earn 2nd place, Maggie Landon tie for 3rd with 101, Madison Shaffer shot 106 for 6th place and Dazlynn Hunt carded a 123 for 8th. The champion was Savannah Peterson of Sundance who carded a score of 95.

The Bobcats finished in third place (404) at Hulett, behind the championship team from Sundance, who finished with a team score of 386.

Hayden Overfield finished the tournament as boy’s champion, carding an impressive 79. Hayden Johnson shot 101 for 8th, Ian Locke shot 104 for 12th, Camden Weyer carded a 120 and Zerrian Stone finished at 125.

Facing some stiff competition from larger schools, the Bobcats finished seventh (369) at Olive Glenn Golf Course in Cody. The boy’s team champion, Riverton, finished with a team score of 306.

Playing in less than ideal conditions (cold, windy and wet), all of the Bobcats improved their scores from earlier in the week.

Hayden Overfield finished the tournament at 77 and tying for 3rd, Hayden Johnson shot 92, Ian Locke shot 98, Zerrian Stone finished at 102 and Camden Weyer carded a 117.

The Lady Cats finished in sixth place at 310. The girl’s team champion was Sheridan with a team score of 255.

Lilly Johnson shot a 92 to tie for 9th, Dazlynn Hunt shot 108, Madison Shaffer shot 110, Maggie Landon and Austin Slagle each shot a 113.

With the team geared up for the spring championship tournament, coach Brandon Deromedi said they will head to Torrington early on Wednesday - to have an chance to walk the course, and to get an idea of how the course will play.

He added, “Cottonwood at Torrington, while relatively short in distance, looks to play very tight. The team will have to hit straight to do well there. When it comes to selecting a club, Torrington looks like a course where accuracy needs to prevail over distance.”
