On the Record policy

It is the Thermopolis Independent Record’s policy that all people arrested or cited under the “Accidents,” “Sheriff’s office” or “Police department” in the On the Record section are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. We print the names of all people upon their initial arrest.

Monday, April 15

2:04 p.m. Marc Alan Cantrell, 44, was arrested for alleged interference with a peace officer. Nathali Cantrell, 29, was arrested on a warrant from Big Horn County. 

10:05 p.m. Deputies located individuals camping in Hot Springs State Park. The individuals were given warnings for camping. 

Tuesday, April 16

6:29 p.m. Agency assist for the Bureau of Indian Affairs with a report of vandalism on the Arapahoe Ranch. The damage was to a building, and a broken window.

Thursday, April 18

4:50 p.m. Agency assist for Highway Patrol in Fremont County.

Friday, April 19

8:24 a.m. Deputies opened an investigation into two possibly neglected dogs on a property in the Grass Creek area. 

4:49 p.m. Deputies took a report of a citizen dispute between neighbors in the Red Lane area. Both neighbors requested the other be trespassed from their property. No other actions were taken at this time. 

10:28 p.m. Agency assist for the Police Department.

Saturday, April 20

5:36 p.m. Deputies responded to a 911 hang up. The caller accidentally dialed 911 and deputies found everything was fine.

Monday, April 15

9:38 a.m. Report of fraud involving an adult male who purchased $3,060 worth of silver off of eBay using PayPal. The seller sent a legal-sized envelope with a basketball card inside. 

5:48 p.m. A vehicle owner requested a report for damages to the passenger door of a car for an insurance claim. 

6:42 p.m. Report of child abuse. The matter is under investigation.

3:40 p.m. Kayden Michael Nielsen, 24, was arrested for alleged child abuse, felony status.

Friday, April 19

10:35 a.m. Report of a student making terroristic threats at Hot Springs County High School. An 18-year-old male student was detained and transported for mental health evaluation and resources. 

5:36 p.m. Report of felony theft in the 100 block of South 6th Street involving a missing iPhone 15 Pro Max. 

10:28 p.m. Patrick Martin Handberg, 46, was arrested for alleged public intoxication and property destruction in the 800 block of Shoshoni Street.

Victoria Sailia Shaffer, possession of a controlled substance, plant, three ounces or less, six months unsupervised probation, fees and fines $1,220 and windshield, obstructed view, fees and fines, $100, and signal required 100 feet before turn, fees and fines $100, and under 21 years, possession of alcohol, fees and fines, $570, and no valid driver’s license, $150. 

John B. Welch, criminal entry, 180 days fail, 143 days suspended, 180 days unsupervised probation, fees and fines $470.
