Spring golf season tees off in Worland

Hot Springs County High School Bobcat golf players opened their spring season last Friday at the Worland Invite, held at Green Hills Golf Club, an eighteen hole public course which boasts a rank of number three among public courses located in the state.

The event was a first outing for most of those competing - leaving the golfers to face the effects of a long winter break from the sport. Conditions were not ideal, including a sustained wind of 25 miles per hour.

Therefore, the scores put up by all of the competitors were not of the kind which many had hoped. Moreover, the rules of the event allowed for just ten players from each team to compete, leaving coach Brandon Deromedi, to select strategically from a pool of thirty nine players on his roster.

The Lady Cats fielded three players, Lilly Johnson, Maggie Landon and Dazlynn Hunt. Each of the girls played well, considering it is early in the season, however, no one on the team was able to break one hundred. The girls team from Sheridan were champions, with a combined score of 257.

The Bobcat boys team was comprised of four players, Hayden Johnson, Zerrian Stone, Camden Weyer and Ian Locke. Again, winter’s inaction negatively impacted the players, with none breaking 100. Team champions were the boys from Riverton, with a combined score of 317.

Three students from Thermopolis Middle School also competed in the middle school bracket, Trevin Shaffer, Lincoln McPhie and Jarrett Cornella. Trevin Shaffer finished the tournament with a score of 86, the best for the players from Thermopolis and good enough for a second place finish in the middle school bracket.

Coach Deromedi said he has high expectations for the team this spring, “The girls team will be in the mix, coming off of their state championship last fall. While there is, perhaps, more work to be done for the boys team, they too should have a strong season.”

Next up for the Bobcats and Lady Cats will be a tournament in Sheridan at Kendrick Golf Course. The state tournament will be held at Kendrick this fall, and a trip there this week will give the Bobcats a great opportunity to see the lay of the land for season’s end.
