TMS basketball report

This past weekend, the Thermopolis 7th grade Middle School Basketball team won the Yellowstone Conference Championship, which was held in Powell, Wyo.

The team entered the tournament with a 12-1 record during the regular season.  The only loss came in an overtime defeat to Lander.

In the first game of the tournament, the Bobcats defeated Riverton by a final score of 39-18. Lane Collamer led the way with 13 points. Carter Hughes-Becerra grabbed 11 rebounds to help pace the Bobcats.

In the semi-final game, the Bobcats faced a tough Lovell team. The team came out firing on all cylinders, and ended up defeating Lovell by a score of 57-28. Jarrett Cornella led the way in scoring in this game with 14 points.  Lane Collamer added 12. Oliver Bihr and Carter Hughes-Becerra each grabbed 7 rebounds for the Bobcats. Tanner Delay had 4 steals and Will Garrison had 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Gavin Livingood added 5 rebounds and 5 points.

This win advanced the Bobcats to the championship game where they took on Burlington.

Burlington is a really good team who had knocked off the #1 seed Lander Tigers in the first round of the tournament.

In the championship game, the Bobcats battled from start to finish, but found themselves trailing the entire game. It was a tightly contested game as both sides played really good defense. The Bobcats were down by 5 points heading into the 4th quarter. Continued good defense and some timely shot making down the stretch brought the Bobcats closer as the game neared the end. Soren Webber knocked down two big 3 pointers in the 4th quarter. With 14 seconds remaining in the game, the Bobcats trailed by 2 points before an out of bounds play produced a big 3 pointer from Lincoln McPhie to put the team up 38-37. Burlington failed to score in the final seconds and the Bobcats won the Conference Championship.

It was an incredible team effort from each and every one of the players on the team. These players will have that championship memory for a lifetime- they worked hard every day and they earned it.

Team members include Gavin Livingood, Carter Hughes-Becerra, Lane Collomer, Tanner Delay, Oliver Bihr, Will Garrison, Lincoln McPhie, Soren Webber and Jarrett Cornella.
