Lady Cats drop tough game to Powell

With frigid temperatures in the weather report, the Hot Springs County High School Girls Basketball Team traveled to Powell this past week-end, for their second game against the Panthers, in as many weeks. The Lady Panthers are a good team this year - coming into the contest at 7 and 2 for the season – and in a replay of the week-end before, proceeded to hand the Lady Cats their eighth defeat.

In the opening quarter, neither team was able to put up a great deal of points - the quarter ending with Thermopolis down by a score of 7 to 2. In the second quarter, a string of unforced errors by the Lady Cats, and the fast pace and sure handed shooting of Powell, led to a half-time score of 26 to 2 - with Thermopolis frozen out of the scoreboard - the Lady Cats two points coming on a lone bucket by Hanna Hill.

The third quarter saw Powell continuing to shoot well, and keeping up a pace that proved difficult for the Lady Cats to match. Hanna Hill stepped up - putting up four additional points for the Ladies (including an impressive 3 point shot). Ina King and Jayssie Owsley were a force on the offensive and defensive boards. Their good efforts, however, led to fowl-outs for each of them in the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Kamryn Farrell and Kenzie Frederick each put up two points. The contest ended with Thermopolis down by a score of 54 to 10.

Coach, Tyler Weinberger, commented: “I don’t think the scoreboard adequately reflects the effort the team put out. We gave ourselves a chance, by holding Powell to just ten points that first quarter. We just weren’t able to sustain the pressure, and we couldn’t get anything to drop for points. I was very impressed with the way the ladies got after the many loose balls, and our communication continues to improve. Hanna Hill really stepped up.”

Looking forward, the Lady Cats go to Worland on Thursday, and then home against Lovell on Friday.
