Lady Cats run into tough weekend

The Hot Springs County High School girls basketball team traveled to Rawlins last weekend for the Winter Classic Tournament, on Friday and Saturday. While the Lady Cats played hard, they are still a young team who are learning the ropes of varsity competition.

The Lady Cats faced three very good teams, and dropped difficult contests over the course of the tournament, losing to Mountain View on Friday by a score of 53 to 19, losing to Lyman on Saturday by a score of 50 to 27 and losing to Pinedale later in the day by a score of 63 to 31.

All of the opponents came into the tournament with winning records at 500 or above, and each team gave the Lady Cats all they had to offer.

Coach Tyler Weinberger said, “We were up against some really good teams, and to be successful, we are going to have to learn to beat good teams. We didn’t score well – shooting just 20% from the floor for the tournament. We came into the weekend shooting 43%, so we certainly had a let up on offense.”

He added, “We lost senior, Kadance Bowman to an injury and we definitely missed her leadership. Freshman, Davdine King, really stepped up, however, taking on a role that is new for her - pulling down some key rebounds and putting up some important points in each game. On the positive side our two centers, took on one of the best centers in the state, and held her in check for most of the game against Pinedale. We’ve got some things to work on, but we’ll get there.”

Next up for the Lady Cats is a trip to Powell for the Big Horn Basin Tournament this weekend.
