Hot Springs County High School hosted a Wyoming Academic Challenge (WAC) Meet on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Thermopolis Middle School. Eight schools were in attendance, with a total of 13 teams competing in the event.
The WAC conducts a series of academic challenge meets throughout the state, which are designed to allow high schools to compete in a regular season of events, culminating in a state tournament. The season runs from October through April of the school year.
WAC rules provide that each event “consists of four or five rounds of questions, covering all subject areas. “ Contestants are not advised in advance which subjects will be covered in the event, and have to come prepared for anything. Questions are presented to the four person teams in either a written or oral format. Teams receive points for each correct answer given. At each event, “awards are given to the top three schools, as well as the top small school (250 or less enrollment).” Additionally, “scholarships, team trophies or plaques, as well as individual medals are awarded.”
Hot Spring County High School fielded two teams at the local event, and finished 4th and 5th overall, and in 1st and 2nd place among the competing small schools. The “Hot Springs 1” team finished 1st among small schools with 102 points, and was comprised of Seth Needham (Capt.); Brody Sorensen; Jarek Jeffs, and Cole Keller. The “Hot Springs 2” team finished 2nd among small schools with 92 points, and was made up of Marcus Page (Capt.); Margo Keller; Jadeth Elder, and Dean Bihr.
The Bobcats have only been competing in WAC events for a little over a year, yet they are performing at a high level of competition, and making the School District very proud.
The next WAC event is scheduled on January 6, 2024, and will be hosted by Northwest College in Powell.
