TMS wrestlers perform well at home and on the road

Coach Toby Emery reports that the Thermopolis Middle School Wrestling Team is off to a great start this season.

“In the first four tournaments we participated in, we have crowned sixteen champs, had thirteen runner-ups, taken six thirds, and placed fourth seven times. As a team, we placed 5th out of 9 teams at Powell; 3rd out of 5 teams at Lovell; 8th out of 13 teams at Riverton; and placed 3rd out of 10 teams at Glenrock,” said Emery of their previous competitions.

The team had two competitions last week. They hosted a quad on Thursday at the middle school where they dualed Riverton and Lander. The TMS Bobcats posted 14 wins and 11 loses against Riverton and 18 wins, 8 loses against Lander.

Coach Emery said, “The team was excited to finally wrestle in Thermopolis in front of their home crowd! The team came out aggressive and on the attack; that was the game plan. They really wrestled well and had a lot of fun doing it. Eleven of our wrestlers went undefeated on the night.”

Undefeated wrestlers include Fischer Lewis (2-0), Ryker Sayler (2-0), Tanner Myers (3-0), Trenton Enis (2-0), Samuel Johnson (2-0), Clint Kimes (2-0), Kacey Mackay (2-0), Tanner Delay (2-0), Hailey Robinson (2-0), Kylie Geis (2-0) and Brayli Price (2-0).

“Silas Dickey and Jack Morningstar each pulled off a come-from-behind win which the home crowd loved! This team feeds off the energy of each other; it’s fun to be a part of that camaraderie,” said coach Emery.

On Saturday, the team traveled to Worland to compete in the Brawl in the Basin Tournament and placed eight wrestlers. TMS Bobcats had four wrestlers make the finals, each earning second place at their respective weights, including Ryker Sayler (84A), Trevin Shaffer (110A), Tanner Delay (120A) and Tyler Morris (145B). Placing third was Trenton Enis (98A).Wrestlers taking fourth include: Tristan Galovich (84B), Kylie Geis (Girls 111-121) and Naomi McCormick (Girls 132-140).

Coach Emery stated, “We placed seventh out of twelve teams with only sixteen wrestlers. I’m very pleased with the team’s progress; each week they continue to grow and that’s fun to see.”

He added, “I’m really impressed with this group of athletes. We have twenty-six wrestlers on the team (17 boys and 9 girls). About 50% of our team is brand new to the sport and the other half is fairly seasoned with experience. The kids are working hard and hungry to learn from each other and the coaches in the practice room. Within our young team, we have some leaders really starting to emerge, which has led to a more effective and cohesive group of wrestlers. It’s fun to watch them grow, not only as individuals, but as a unit as well!”

Their next competition is this Friday, Nov. 17, in Shoshoni at the high school gym with action starting at 2 p.m.
