Honoring veterans

by Lara Love

Veterans Day is Saturday, Nov. 11. I want to take a moment to honor those who have served and are serving our country. Their sacrifices and dedication to protecting our freedoms are truly admirable.

My grandfather served in the 2nd Armored Division (Hell on Wheels). The division played important roles during World War II in the invasions of Germany, North Africa and Sicily and in the liberation of France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

He rarely spoke about his experiences, but I know that he and his fellow soldiers faced unimaginable challenges and danger, as so many veterans have. It is because of their bravery, that we can enjoy the freedoms we have today.

Ten of the many freedoms we enjoy thanks to veterans are:

1. Freedom to worship how we see fit.

2. Freedom of speech.

3. Freedom to own firearms.

4. Freedom to move about our country.

5. Freedom to cause change.

6. Freedom of the press.

7. Freedom to own a home.

8. Freedom to get an education.

9. Freedom of entrepreneurship.

10. Freedom to not live in fear.

So, on this Veterans Day, I want to express my gratitude to all who have served and continue to serve our country. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

For information on local events honoring veterans, see page 5 and page 7 of this paper. The VFW Post #2281 ad on page 3 gives details on their plans.

“This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.” -Elmer Davis
