Weed and Pest offers mosquito prevention information

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” (Benjamin Franklin).

The Hot Springs County Weed & Pest district has started the 2023 Mosquito Control Program. You can also take steps to help protect yourself, your family and your community.

How to protect against mosquito bites

Mosquitoes bite during the day and night. Protect your family from mosquito bites. Use insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, and take steps to control mosquitoes indoors and outdoors.

Preventing mosquitoes from laying eggs and eggs from hatching

Mosquitoes lay eggs in or near water. Eggs can develop into adults in about a week. You can apply adulticides according to label instructions to kill mosquitoes inside and outside homes.

The best method to reduce mosquito breeding on your property is to limit the number of potential sources. Inspect around and inside your home for standing water, like in tires, buckets, planters, toys, birdbaths, trash containers, flower pot saucers, depressions in dirt or plastic ground linings, etc. If standing water is found, empty or throw away. If you can’t remove the source check weekly and after rain events.
