Bobcat golfers win spring championship

The Bobcat boys golf team wrapped up their season by winning first at the 2A Spring Championships at the Green Hills Golf Course in Worland last week. They had a two round total of 734, winning over 2nd place Kemmerer with 756 and 3rd place Moorcroft with 813.

Senior Hadley Johnson shot a 169 to earn 2nd place. He was narrowly defeated by first place finisher Logan Timberman of Upton who shot a 164. Bobcat sophomore Hayden Overfield shot a 176 to tie for 7th place. Seniors Jonah Needham shot a 194 and Spencer Calhoun a 195 for 14th and 15th place. Freshman Nolin Collins shot a 254.

For the Lady Cats, freshman Lilly Johnson was the top finisher coming in 15th with a two round total of 257. Freshman Madison Shaffer shot a 261, junior Maggie Landon shot a 265, junior Dazlynn Hunt shot a 293 and senior Ruthanne Johnson shot a 313.

The Bobcats and Lady Bobcats teams also each won Cowboy Conference Titles.

Typical Wyoming spring weather made play tough on the golfers, with high winds and rain Thursday and wind continuing on Friday.

“Anyone who has ever played golf could tell you the effect of wind on the game, frustrating,” said coach Brandon Deromedi.

Reflecting on the season, coach Deromedi said “The spring 2023 golf season has come to a close but not without a lot of accomplishments. The season began with a record setting number of students out for golf. At the high school level we had 19 competitors and 10 at the middle school. While this created some complications for the flow of practice, it was a great situation.”

He added, “I am so proud of each and every one of the athletes for stepping up and trying something new or for bettering their golf games. This type of turnout helps the golf team, the golf course and gives each athlete a lifetime sport that they can use forever.”

A few of these Bobcat athletes competed in their first golf culminating event and that creates a lot of nerves. According to Deromedi, “All things considered, everyone on the team played well.”

“I have had so much fun coaching this team this spring and hope the athletes continue to play throughout the summer so we can return this fall as a competitive unit once again” added coach Deromedi.
