Lady Cats headed to regional tourney

Last Friday, the varsity Lady Cats basketball team played their last home game against Lovell, with Lovell getting the win, 48-27.

“It would be our senior night along with our pink out game. The last time we played Lovell we held our own against them. We even came out with an early lead. This time around they had one of their injured players back and would end up helping them quite a bit,” said coach David Villa.

For the two seniors, Ruth Johnson and Jayci Basse, this would be their last home game in front of the home crowd. As it is for any senior it would be an emotional one for them. “No matter what is said it is going to be hard, nerve wracking and emotional for any senior.”

Lovell would come out on top in the first quarter 10-7. “We had some initial good looks at the rim but the way our past several games have gone the ball didn’t want to go in. The second quarter Lovell would continue scoring well and we would only score two points. We started to force the ball and had a hard time with the press again. There were a lot of mental mistakes in this game. It would be our second week with limited practices due to weather but that being said we don’t make excuses.” The girls had some good defensive stops during the game but in the end, it was who made the most baskets-and Lovell would do just that.

Scoring: Johnson 6 points, Kadance Bowman 6, Ina King 2, Kamryn Farrell 2 and Jayssie Owsley 11.

“Both seniors would leave it all on the floor and though they didn’t get the win I couldn’t have been more proud of their effort,” said coach Villa.

The team’s second conference game would be in Powell, who were ranked #5 in 3A.

“The first half I thought we played some of our best defense. The first half we would be down 23 to 17. Powell would have other players step up with scoring. The last two times we played Powell was up 26 to 14 the first half and in the beginning of the season Powell would be up 31 to 0. So, have we improved-yes. Powell would get the win in the end as the third quarter would be the downfall. I felt we had spent so much energy in our defense the first half that our legs weren’t there in the second half and we struggled with making shots,” said coach Villa.

Powell would win 52 to 25.

Scoring: Basse 2 points, Johnson 3, Dazlynn Hunt 2, Maggie Landon 6, Bowman 2, Farrell with 3 and Owsley 7.

“It is near the end of the season as we now prepare for regionals. It is time for us to empty the tank and leave it all on the floor.”

The Lady Cats take on Pinedale at 4 p.m. Thursday in Mountain View.
