Six Wyoming students were recently honored as essay contest and good citizen award recipients by the Sheridan Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
Jayci Basse from Hot Springs High School, Claire Justice from Tongue River High School, Shelby Fennema from School District #3, High School, Brogan Byram from Buffalo High School, and Zane Neville from Kaycee High School received the DAR Good Citizens Award. This award, created in 1934, recognizes and rewards high school seniors who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. These students are selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree.
Tristan A. Schroeder, an 8th grader at Sheridan Junior High School, received the chapter’s award for his essay on patriotism, DAR member Marcia Gonda, presented Tristan with the award and also announced that his essay also won the state level award. His essay will now advance to the divisional level. The American History Essay Contest was established to encourage young people to think creatively about our nation’s great history and learn about history in a new light. Essays are judged for historical accuracy, adherence to topic, organization of materials, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation and neatness.
Zane Neville from Kaycee was also recognized for his essay which has been entered into the state competition. All of the recipients received a monetary award and a card stating they had won the award.
The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children.
