Limited Urban Agriculture proposed in town

Are we being oppressed?

Oppression -

1. dominate harshly: to subject a person or a people to a harsh or cruel form of domination

2. inflict stress on: to be a source of worry, stress, or trouble to somebody 3. suppress: to hold something in check or put an end to it (archaic)

That’s a strong word to some, but none of its synonyms are any better, domination, coercion, cruelty, tyranny, subjugation, persecution, harassment, or repression. The word we all love better is the antonym, of liberty.

I’m just asking that the townspeople be relieved of any heavy-handed ordinances that would hinder the personal rights of its property owners. It would be safe to say that each of us would love to maximize the potential of our land. Why should those who happen to reside within the established city limits be limited in what they can reasonably do to accomplish that?

Through the spring I will be setting forth a plan to introduce Limited Urban Agriculture to the city of Thermopolis. Each of these initial implements has been proven to be highly effective for those who have chosen to utilize them. Each of the following will need to eventually be removed from the current ordinances:

Rabbits, Chickens (12) NO roosters, Ducks (5) Breed specific, Dwarf / Miniature Goats (2) Does & Wethers only.

Differing from most other towns’ policies, I will be asking that this be conditional and have a probationary period.

Did you say initial implements? Is this just the beginning? Next, you are going to want pigs, cows, and horses! There is no need for these animals in the plan being presented. This model is based on the Dervaes family which produces high yields on 1/10th of an acre, they effectively utilize each element being requested.

This plan is also within the reasonable confines of the capitalist structure of America’s society.

Capitalism - free-market system: an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production and distribution of goods, characterized by a free competitive market and motivation by profit

Though I won’t go as far as to say “We’re talking about the economy stupid” as Mr. James Carvel did, it is indeed about my ability to maintain a healthy, productive, competitive form of livelihood. As I’ve stated before, the animals I’m asking for are currently being used by individuals to be healthier, highly productive, community awarded, and very competitive in modern civilized municipalities.

We all love unconstitutional mandates here in Wyoming. We don’t let the worst-case scenario govern us on pandemics, guns, or alcohol, why would we on a simple matter such as this? Will there be violations? Possibly so, but we must have higher hopes for our city’s ability to govern itself. Maybe some believe we are not collectively responsible enough as citizens, to handle what a majority (and growing) of the other cities in the USA are capable of.  I think we are and I desperately hope you feel the same.

Sincerely,

Darren Cole Butcher
