TMS basketball scoreboard

On Tuesday, Jan. 31, the Thermopolis Middle School 7th/8th grades mixed the teams and finished the month strong with games against Wind River.

Game Scores:

Wind River (23) vs Thermopolis (54)

Wind River (5) vs Thermopolis (49)

Coach Ryan Shaffer said, “This was a great opportunity to get back into the swing of things as we had 7 days off prior. As Wind River only had two teams, we mixed the 7th and 8th grade teams to allow for them to play together for the first time this year. It was a good game where we were able to see the 7th grade boys work on some of their plays and the 8th grade boys try some different defenses.”

In the first game all 12 players scored with Anthony Cheatham leading the way with 8. The second game 13 of the 14 players scored with Davian Martinez leading with 8 points.

8th Grade

On Saturday, Feb. 4, the 8th grade teams (A&B) traveled to Riverton to play Riverton and Lander.

Riverton A (38) vs Thermopolis A (31)

Coach Shaffer stated, “Unfortunately we started a bit slow on this one giving them a pretty large lead going into the 4th quarter. Being down 16-32, we were finally able to create some turnovers and push the ball. We had some good production from Brody Welch getting 8 points, the majority off of turnovers he created. Defensively, we did pretty well generating turnovers and boxing out for good rebounds. Both Buckner and Cheatham stepped up big for us down low.

Riverton B (15) vs Thermopolis B (31)

“Another good game by our B team as defensively we couldn’t ask for much more from them. Creating turnovers, running the ball well, and shooting for deep pulled us to a strong lead that we held. Mann hit some big shots in this game making 3 3-point shots for the game. That along with Cheatham playing big down low and even hitting an outside 3 kept us out of range for Riverton’s B team,” said coach Shaffer.

Lander A (53) vs Thermopolis A (57)

“We struggled to get things going early being down 20 points in the second quarter, but thankfully it finally kicked in.” The team outscoring Lander 36-21 in the second half allowed the boys to crawl back in this one and steal it in overtime. “It was a great game for us as our team showed the mental toughness it has by overcoming the deficit. Buckner showed how dominant he can be by scoring 18 in this one, with Welch adding 15. Down low we created havoc for Lander as we outsized them. It also created open shots for the guys outside, allowing both Garrison and Simeral to hit some big buckets,” said coach Shaffer.

Lander B (18) vs Thermopolis B (33)

“M. Martinez and Mann really showed how defensively they can change a game. With several steals leading to quick buckets, they gave us a 9-point lead going into halftime that we were able to extend in the second half. Mann with another high scoring game with 13 and M. Martinez with 8 dominated the front court. Mascorro and Cheatham helped down low adding another 5 and 4 points respectively to the team. Overall, another great performance,” said coach Shaffer
