Last Friday the varsity Lady Cats basketball team played a conference game against the Powell Panthers.
The girls had some good moments in stopping Powell and had good performance on the offense end, but fell to the Lady Panthers 58-32.
“We knew this would be a tough game especially mentally. Would we bounce back from losing to them the previous week? We had prepared for their pressure defense all week,” said coach David Villa.
Freshman Jayssie Owsley would get hurt Monday during practice and be sidelined the whole week.
“We made adjustments to use junior forward Ina King and made the choice to go zone against them. We would receive good news that Owsley was feeling better and would be able to play in the game. She would be able to come off the bench for us,” said coach David Villa.
He added, “The keys to this game would be to move the ball and get paint touches, rebound the ball and not give them second chance shots, and thirdly not to turn the ball over double digits. The first half of the game it seemed as if we were accomplishing our goals. We did have some early turnovers in the first quarter but adjusted our press breaker. The good part of the game was we forced Powell to take off their press due to us beating and getting points off it.”
Prior to the game, coaches reminded the Lady Cats to play hard and keep the game simple.
“I feel we struggle when we are trying to do too much as individuals. When we are moving the ball on both sides and taking up to 25 seconds to score we fare better. We don’t perform so well offensively when we rush our shots. This will be something we work on this week as we face the Worland Warriors,” said coach Villa.
Scorers include: senior Jayci Basse 4 points, juniors Dazlynn Hunt 6 and Kadance Bowman 5, freshman Jayssie Owsley scored 6 points and Kamryn Farrell 11.
“As a coaching staff we were proud of their effort and spirit to compete to the end,” said coach Villa.
He added, “As we head into this week, we will face the Worland Warriors who will be one of the tallest teams we face and it will be critical to rebound strong, protect the ball and get quality looks at the rim. I am sure that Worland along with Lovell will have read the scouting reports and look to pressure us. We will make further adjustments against the pressure this week. It will be a great environment this Friday.”
