Wrestlers shine at Powell

The Bobcat Wrestlers started their season at the Powell invitational last Friday and Saturday with over 500 wrestlers competing. This was by far the largest that this tournament has been with teams from Wyoming and Montana competing.

Friday the boys competed in pool wrestling trying to make the bracket on Saturday for placing.

The Bobcats started off tentative then improved as the long day progressed.

"After getting the bugs worked out early, we had five make the second day in both varsity and JV," said coach Travis McDermott.

In varsity Roedy Farrell kicked off his senior year with a dominate first day. Farrell, who is looking for his 3rd State Championship this year, pinned all four opponents in a 2:35 total on Friday.

Saturday, he put together a great day as well with a bit more competition all from Montana. Farrell gritted out a 8-4 decision over Huntley Project's Lindeen for the championship, earning his 2nd straight Powell Championship.

Other varsity wrestlers include Will Ward who made improvements through the tournament to get a 4th place finish at 132. Brody Sorensen also had a good weekend knocking off the 145lb. state runner up from Rocky Mountain in his first match on Saturday, ending up with a 4th place finish.

For the JV Bobcats, Samuel Skelton took the Championship at 160lbs., pinning five of his six opponents on the weekend. Lance Axtell also brought home a 4th place finish at 126lbs.

"As this is the first tournament we really find out where our technical and conditioning development needs to go. For the most part our conditioning looked good this early in the season. As far as our technique we had good points but were missing out on some basic skills that will be worked out in the next couple of weeks," said coach McDermott.

This week the Bobcats are at home for a dual against Greybull/Riverside on Thursday at the High School beginning at 5 p.m. Then Friday and Saturday they will be in Worland for the Battle of the Big Horn dual tournament.
