This is the first year that girls wrestling is sanctioned in Wyoming and the Lady Cats will have four girls that will be making history all season long.
Last year Wyoming had under 50 girls wrestling a mixed season with boys. This year, during weight certification, the state has over 200 girls registered.
Alix Sorensen started the season with a bang becoming the first Lady Cats tournament champion at 145lbs. "She was nervous and tentative most of the tournament but did what she needed to do to become our first champ," said coach Travis McDermott.
Alix is not new to wrestling as she has wrestled all through middle school. She learned a lot on Friday as she went 1-3 for the day.
On the second day she avenged all 3 of her losses by beating Mares from Natrona County, Hudson from Buffalo, and finally Ramirez from Worland to claim the championship. "With plenty of room for growth Alix showed she is going to be a contender at the first Wyoming Girls State Championship," said coach McDermott.
Tera Kraushaar earned a 3rd place finish at 190lbs. "Tera is new to wrestling and stayed mentally tough through the tournament and improved every time she went on the mat. Tera is taking strides to catch up with girls that have experience wrestling and her attitude towards learning a new sport will take her far," said coach McDermott.
He added, "I am so excited for these girls to get the opportunity to compete together. It is incredible to see the ladies camaraderie between all the teams. They already are forming friendships and encouraging each other because they understand how great this opportunity is.
The Lady cats will be competing at the Battle of the Big Horn this weekend.
