Hot Springs Thrift opens

David Souders has opened Hot Springs Thrift located at 1002 Shoshoni. The shop contains a variety of clothes, shoes, small pieces of furniture, videos, etc.

Souders moved to Thermopolis in February 2020 just after he shut down a 1950s-style restaurant he owned in New Castle, Colorado, just before Covid occurred. He later applied for a local position and was hired.

Souders explained his motivation for the thrift shop and said, “This is something that I feel like I want to do for the community.”

Additionally, Souders said, “My kids never knew what new clothes were. In order for me to survive being married and stuff, we always bought the kids stuff at thrift stores. And we had “grow boxes” when the kids were growing up. So we saw something that would fit them next year. We’d buy it because it was $10, $15, $20. So the money we saved by buying clothes affordably, we were able to take the kids on vacations and survive where we lived because, in Colorado, it’s kind of a pricey town you can live in.”

“So, coming up here, I see people have the same issues. You know, they’re struggling to get ahead. The economy, inflation’s getting out-of-control right now. What used to cost this price is now doubled. And so I’m like, you know, people have the same price, the same problem. So if I can open something and give it maximum clothing, some cleats, some things that the kids need and people need, then I’m doing my part for the community out of it.”

Souders went further and explained how he offers to do swapping of items without the exchange of money. Customers can come in and work out a trade. Souder wants to do more to help out the town and see if the Lions Club or the Rotary club needs help.

The Hot Springs Thrift store is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. They are closed for lunch from 1-1:30 p.m.
