Girls wrap up season at regionals

The Lady Cats wrapped up their season at the 3A East Regional tournament last weekend in Burns.

The Cats went into their first game against Torrington  knowing that their whole focus needed to be on defense and getting critical stops. The Ladies had confidence with their shooting and knew that playing against Torrington would be a tough game due to height and physical play.

Offensively the Lady Cats struggled to get going. Struggling to make their shots, the Cats lost their first game at regionals with a final score of Thermopolis 20 Torrington 48.

“ I felt our defense had some key stops but not getting our points when needed caused the loss,” coach David Villa talked of the Cats in their first game of Regionals.  Lead scorers include Kamry Bowman with 7, R. Johnson 6, Kadance Bowman 3, M. Brooks 2, and L. Myers and I. King with 1.

Going into their second game at regionals the Lady Cats went up against Wheatland. The team discussed the importance of this game and were aware of the win or go home aspect. The girls knew that they were evenly matched with Wheatland and felt confident that they were going to get the win.

Kamry Bowman led the Lady Cats with scoring 20 points helping to ensure the win and assisting other teammates. The girls won 33-29 against Wheatland and advanced.  Lead scorers of the Wheatland game include Kamry Bowman 20, R. Johnson 8, M. Brooks with 4, and L. Myers with 1. “Kamry with 20 point in our victory over Wheatland, she had some great shots at key moments and positioned us for the win,” said coach Villa.

For their qualifying game the Lady Cats had to face Newcastle and knew that a win was necessary to move on to the next weekend at state.  The girls fell short with their defense and offense play with role players struggling to sink the shots. The Ladies had a good first quarter but struggled getting their game flow through the next three quarters.  The final score against Newcastle was Thermopolis 20 and Newcastle 44.

Coach Villa said, “ Though we wanted to qualify for state, we did have success in getting a regional win.”  Lead scorers were R. Johnson 8 points, M. Brooks 4, M. Landon and L. Myers with 3, and J. Basse with 2.

Coach Villa wanted to thank all the supporters through this season including all the volunteers and especially the parents that showed nothing but support to the Lady Cats.
