Lady Cats win against Greybull

The Lady Cats basketball teams were at home this past weekend against Greybull, Wyoming Indian, and Burlington.

The Varsity Ladies played against Greybull and walked away with the win 35-27.  They played a physical game against Greybull with lots of speed that helped with the win.

“The team pushed the tempo and it made a difference,” expressed Coach David Villa about the start of the weekend.

Top scorers against Greybull were Kamry Bowman with 11 points, Dazlynn Hunt 6 points and Mariah Brooks with 7 points.  Remaining points were spread throughout the whole team.

Against Wyoming Indian the Lady Cats lost by 10 letting their shots get away from them. The Cats changed defense in hopes that they could  turn the game around. In the 3rd quarter the Cats tied the game and were hopeful to pull forward but shot selection and patience would lead to the loss.

Coach Villa said, “The girls played at moments tired and when you are tired it affects the mind so we made mistakes at crucial times.”

Wyoming Indian 38, Thermopolis 28 with high scorers being: Kamry Bowman with 8 points, Mariah Brooks with 11 points, Layne Myers with 3 points, Dazlynn Hunt with 2 points and Jayci Basse with 4 points.

The Varsity Lady Cats fought hard against Burlington with a 5 point win ending the fourth quarter. The ladies played a physical game and the need to change our defense to man to man was necessary as they had some great shooters.

At halftime the Cats were in a good position going into the third quarter.  In the third quarter the Cats built a double digit lead letting Burlington score and making a comeback by the end of the quarter ending up with a tied score.

In the fourth quarter the teams fought hard and it came down to who wanted the game more and the Lady Cats proved it was them with the win.

“Overall it was another weekend of growing, improving, and getting tougher,” coach Villa talked about his team.

He added, “Ruth Johnson played great ball against Burlington getting key rebounds and giving second chance shots.  Kamry Bowman played a key part in chasing down shots for the Cats scoring 15 points.  Mariah Brooks played great offense after struggling the previous games she was a top scorer of 12 points to help secure the W.”

Coach Villa wanted to give a special shout out to Dazlynn Hunt and Jayci Basse for being quick and fearless and playing tough in all three games.

The JV Lady Cats did not walk away with a win this past weekend, but the Ladies continued to play and grow as a team making the shots fall in the first game against Wyoming Indian. They lost the game 51-36.

“I’m still seeing a lot of good things come from the work effort these girls continue to have throughout each game,” Coach Katlin Despain said about the Ladies first game.

Kadence Bowman with 12 points, Ina King 9 points and Maggie Landon with 7 points were the high scorers of the game.  Against Burlington the Lady Cats lost as they were not able to sink the shots, the final score was 10-32.

The Freshman did not walk away with the win against Lovell final score was 5-56.  Coach Weinberger wanted to give a shout out to Hanna Hill for taking the role of point guard for the Freshman team and for playing hard for JV as well.  He also wanted to point out that Aspen Brooks led the team in deflections on defense and showed a lot of toughness on defense.

This weekend the Lady Cats Varsity and JV will travel to Newcastle Friday and turn around to take on Douglas on home court Saturday.  The Saturday games will start at 11 a.m. with JV in the Thermopolis Middle School gym.  Varsity will play at 2 p.m. at the Hot Springs County High School gym.
