Two wrestlers place at tourney

After a break in action for the holidays, varsity Bobcat wrestlers hit the road to Douglas with eight wrestlers. Wyatt McDermott placed 2nd and Roedy Farrell placed 3rd.

Coach Travis McDermott stated “This is one of the toughest tournaments of the year for the Bobcats with mainly 4A and 3A in attendance.”

McDermott at 145 lbs dominated Friday with a 16-2 win over Sheridan’s Crow, followed by a pin against Natrona’s Brenton.  Saturday he went up against Douglas’s Wehr in the semifinals and after a tough fight won 9-5. For the championship McDermott lost to Rose of Thunder Basin with a score of 6-4.

“McDermott wrestled hard but gave up too many reversals in the final match,” said the coach.

Farrell at 160 lbs dominated the first day with pins over Aquirre of Sheridan and Olsen of Cheyenne East.  Farrell’s semifinal match was against last year’s 3A State Champion Ewing of Douglas. At the end of the second period the score was 0-0, going into the 3rd Ewing got an escape staying away from Farrell’s dangerous takedowns. With one mistake from Farrell, Ewing ended with a takedown making the score 3-0.  Farrell won his consolation semi with a pin over Johnson of Thunder Basin. He then won his 3rd place match over Grooms of Sheridan 9-4.

Senior Austin Barral, freshman Will Ward and Brody Sorensen fought hard and each went away with a few wins.

JV Bobcats traveled to Cody on Saturday taking nine wrestlers.  Jessen Basse and Seth Needham went undefeated at 4-0.

“Wrestlers got some decent mat time and worked on technique that they have been practicing” coaches said about the Cats performance.

Lance Axtell at 113 lbs. went 1-2, Zane Stam at 126 lbs. went 3-1, Daniel Blair at 132 lbs. went 1-3, Sam Skelton at 152 lbs. went 2-1 and Mason Reese at 170 lbs. went 3-1.

This coming week is going to be a busy week for the Bobcat Wrestlers.  On Friday the Bobcats will be in Basin for a dual and on Saturday they will be competing against multiple teams in Wind River.

Then on Tuesday, Jan. 18 they will have a home dual against Lander starting at 5 p.m. in the high school gym.
