Boys win three on the road

The Bobcat Varsity Boys Basketball team came back from the holiday break to start their weekend with a slow start against Pinedale last week, with a score of zero at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the rust wore off and the Bobcats out scored Pinedale 22-6.  The Bobcats tried to pull forward but couldn’t quite do it.  Through the fourth quarter they held the lead for most of the quarter, then Pinedale went on a 8-0 run with a minute of play left giving them a five point lead.

The Bobcats did not get discouraged and Gavin Shumway hit a clutch three pointer to pull the Cats within two points. The Bobcats played strong defense and got the stop and Jase Longwell with the layup tied the game with 15 seconds to go.  Hardy Johnson then stole an in bounds pass, converted a layup and was fouled resulting in the Bobcats walking away with a 63-60 hard fought win.

Against Mountain View the Bobcats played solid ball throughout the game.  Playing a defensive game the boys were able to hold them to 42 points.

“I was really impressed with our team in the fourth quarter,” said coach Shane Corpening about the Bobcats. The Cats had a 6 point lead going into the quarter and continued to be patient playing offense, using the clock to their advantage and using defensive stops for the win, 52-48.

The Cats finished their weekend away games against Big Piney, starting off with full court press defense.  Jase Longwell scored ten points in the first quarter getting the Bobcats started. Hardy Johnson led the second quarter with 9 points.  Gavin Shumway exploded in the third quarter scoring 16 points with 4/4 three pointers.  Adley Coyne closed the fourth quarter having a couple timely steals and adding 7 points to the final score. The Bobcats beat Big Piney with a final score of 87-68.

“Overall we had a lot of good contributions and really balanced scoring on offense,” said coach Corpening.  When asked about any MVPs coach Corpening named several as the Cats worked well as a team.  Some team stats mentioned are Hardy Johnson averaged 17 points with a bunch of steals and assists. Gavin Shumway averaged 13 points over the weekend. Adley Coyne averaged 12 points and a pile of rebounds. Jase Longwell averaged 11 points with 8 rebounds and Cord Simeral averaged 12 points.

The Bobcats upcoming schedule includes: Freshman boys will travel to Lander on Thursday,  JV and Varsity teams will be traveling between Worland and Thermopolis attending the BHB Classic Friday and Saturday. Come out and cheer on the Bobcats.
