Lady Cats win against Burlington, fall to Newcastle

The Lady Cats varsity volleyball team took on Burlington last Thursday evening and won in 4 games, 25-22, 26-24, 20-25 and 25-17.

"I was proud of my girls for staying consistent and competitive during the whole match. Burlington was a scrappy team and kept digging our hits but our girls stuck with it and even though the games were close they stayed focused and pulled off wins," said coach Shannon Hill.

She added, "Even in game three, when we were down by 12 points, we focused back in and went on a 7 point run but it was just too little, too late. In game 4 we focused in and stayed on top the whole game."

Stats from the Burlington game include: Lexi Overfield 10 kills, 3 aces, 2 blocks; Julie Johnson 13 kills, 2 aces; Mariah Brooks 10 kills and Saraiya Sosa 11 digs.

Friday night the Lady Cats played Newcastle for Senior night and emotions were running high.

"My girls dug themselves a hole from the get go in both games one and two and couldn't quite climb out of it," said Hill.

She added, "In game three we finally showed some competitiveness and served tough  and that's what got us the lead and then we never lost that lead."

Saraiya Sosa served well in game three and had three aces to get the girls on a run, followed by Jayci Basse's two aces to keep the girls ahead.

"Then in game four we lost our focus and let down and you could see the girls kind of check-out in that game. We struggle with consistency and so that will be the main focus for us this week at practice, consistency and competitiveness," said Hill.

Scores from the Newcastle games: 19-25, 17-25, 25-19 and 11-25

Stats include: Kamry Bowman 10 kills; Saraiya Sosa 13 digs, 3 aces and Jayci Basse 2 aces, 7 digs.
