Jim (Jimmie Allen) Dowdy passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones on September 24, 2021.
He was born September 19, 1933, to William and Ada (Van Orsdal) Dowdy in Fort Lupton, Colo. Jim was the 11th of twelve children, and the last to be called home to the Lord.
Jim served in the United States Marine Corps for four years in Korea and was honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was also a Golden Gloves Boxer, a talent for fighting that kept him from advancing in rank a few times. A skilled heavy equipment operator, Jim ran a TD18 Cat in Korea, and later ran a crusher for Canyon Concrete for many years, affectionately and respectfully known as, "The Pit Boss."
Jim was involved in many community activities, organizations, and boards. Some of these were appointments to the Tri-County Electric Board, Predator Board, and he was very proud to have been appointed by Senator Cliff Hanson to the Wyoming State ASCS. He served as President of the Upton School Board. He was a 4-H leader and FFA Volunteer. Jim and Nellie also fostered many kids after raising their own.
Jim was known far and wide for his vast knowledge in veterinary medicine and animal nutrition. He raised horses, hogs, dogs, chickens, cows, and kids. And some sheep.
Jim married Nellie Mellor on October 16, 1955. They were just as in love at the end as in the beginning. Sixty years brought four children: Debbie (Tom) Christensen of Thermopolis, Dan Dowdy of Holden, UT, Nick (Jo) Dowdy of Thermopolis, and Twitter (Clint) Westover of Moorcroft, ten grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.
An avid fisherman and hunter, Jim was a dead shot. He was banned from the Soda Butte Turkey Shoot to give somebody else a chance to win.
A celebration of life is planned for June 18, 2022 at 2 p.m. Location TBD. Online condolences may be made at http://www.bryantfuneralhomeonline.com
