Chamber asks for interest in fireworks stand

At the March Chamber of Commerce meeting under old business, the board voted to approve their 2021 strategic plan.

According to Chamber Director Meri Ann Rush, they didn’t change much to it compared to last year with the exception of taking steps to educate the community about all the Chamber’s benefits. The Chamber doesn’t want to be seen as just an organization that holds parades and fundraisers. Rush said there is much more. Since they voted to approve the plan, they will go over it in more detail with action steps at their annual board meetings on April 8.

Also, under old business, was the subject of the fireworks stand and whether the chamber should continue with its involvement or not.

Rush said she “appreciates the discussion and patience with the last time they met.” Rush added that board member Beth Lewis’s insight about the chamber was here to not compete with other businesses was valuable. Rush said, “We’re here to promote the community.” After saying that the fireworks stand was fun and a great way to meet the community, Rush said, “It’s time to step away the correct way.”

After this Rush asked if they could have a motion to continue the work of the fireworks stand to put the subject to a vote. It is noteworthy that in parliamentary procedures members cannot ask for a negative motion. After a second and not much discussion, the Chamber Board unanimously voted to not continue their involvement in the fireworks stand. Rush plans on contacting everyone who might be interested in taking on the role of managing the fireworks stand.

Rush also wanted to express to the public that the chamber is an organization with board members who vote to make decisions and that she as the director isn’t the sole decision-maker.

President Pastor Sam Needham appointed a selection committee for the next slate for upcoming elections to the board. Lana Nicodemus and Susan Linko are up for reelection.

For his Main Street Thermopolis report, Howie Samelson said that they are still working on the facade grants and are in a discussion on how to properly handle snow removal on the south side of the street since it’s in the shade. They are also preparing for the Main Street business conference, which will be held virtually.

In the director’s report Rush said they have partnered with the Public Health Office and the Department of Family Services and applied for a children’s trust fund grant.

The Chamber Business After Hours event on March 18 at Central Bank and Trust has been canceled. The next Chamber meeting will be on April 8.
