Cross Country headed to Powell

The Bobcat Cross Country team traveled to Cody for their invitational last week and the girls team got to see some good competition from the Lovell Lady Bulldogs.

Coach Stephanie Metz said Lovell will be the Lady Cats’ main competition when they head to state in Douglas on October 24.

The boys also saw some amazing competition and were able to get up and race some 3A schools.

Metz said Corbin Simeral ran an amazing time of 19:20 for the two-mile race.

“He’s getting closer and closer to breaking the 19 minute mark for this season,” she said, “and we’re hoping he’s able to do so this weekend in Powell.”

Jesse Rodriguez was another outstanding racer, achieving his personal best of 21:01, so close to breaking 21, which is averaging about a seven-minute mile.

Isaac Robinson also had a personal record run, dropping another 30 seconds off his time.

“We’re hoping he can break 23:00 this weekend at Powell,” she said.

Metz also commented on senior Ryan Miller, who is doing great considering his injury at the start of the season.

“Each race he’s looking stronger and able to maintain a faster pace,” Metz said.

On the girls side, Hallie Martinez led the way, running a good race, even though Metz said there is still some room for improvement on her second mile before State.

Rebekah Johnson, Ruthanne Johnson and Elizabeth Kellar will also be challenging themselves at the Powell meet for better overall times.

“Everyone’s first mile looked strong,” Metz said, “but the second mile was when the girls struggled to maintain their pace and weren’t able to bring it back at the end. We’ll see similar competition in Powell, so athletes will be able to challenge themselves to improve their time and rankings.”

The team will begin running at 3 p.m. on Friday at the Powell Golf Course.
