Lady Cats volleyball team works to find rhythm

The Lady Cats Volleyball team had two conference matches last week, playing first against Newcastle on Thursday, followed by Douglas on Saturday afternoon.

The girls lost in four games against Newcastle, and coach Shannon Hill said, "We had too many errors and just couldn't put the ball away. Newcastle has two big middles, but our middles matched up well, we just couldn't get a rhythm going on our side of the net."

Game scores vs. Newcastle were 20-25, 25-21, 13-25 and 22-25.

Reagan Severance and Grace Whitt led the team in kills with five each as well as three aces each. Severance also added 13 digs to her stats and Whitt, along with Lexi Overfield had two blocks each.

Saturday the Cats played Douglas, and while they still lost in three, their scores were not far behind: 10-25, 17-25 and 14-25.

"I switched our lineup and had girls playing in different positions and so it took us a game to settle into our new rotation," Hill said, "but then we picked it up and played better in game two and three."

Julie Johnson stepped in and played great in the middle. Hill said there were glimpses of great volleyball against a tough opponent.

"We are slowly starting to figure it out and make the pieces work," Hill said, "because the talent is there, we just need to figure out how to pull it out consistently.

Johnson pulled off five kills against the Lady Bearcats and Brianna DeVries had one ace for the day. Whitt and Overfield once again had the blocking down, this time knocking back one each. The stats finish off with Tricia Capelle with eight digs on the day.

This week the Lady Cats take on Burlingon at home Friday with Freshman playing at 4 p.m., JV at 5 p.m. and Varsity hits the court at 6 p.m.

Saturday they hit the road to take on Rocky Mountain.
