The Lady Bobcat volleyball team started their season with a pair of matches over the weekend, first taking on defending state champions, the Lady Outlaws of Rawlins, followed by meeting the Lady Warriors from Worland.
The season opener on Friday against the Lady Outlaws was a rough start, but head coach Shannon Hill said the team can always learn and grow, no matter the opponent.
"We struggled with serve/receive from the beginning, and without that we are unable to put the ball in the system and capitalize on offense," Hill said.
Serve/receive and defense are areas she plans on focusing on with the girls this week at practice.
"When we were in-system, our team was hitting in the positive," she said, "which is a growth piece for our program."
Individually, Lexi Overfield, Reagan Severance and Elisa Weber each had two kills. Weber also had an ace for the evening and Overfield had a single block. Bri DeVries started her season opener with 10 digs.
The girls dropped all three against Rawlins, 25-9, 25-6 and 25-12.
On Saturday, the Lady Cats popped over to Worland and Hill said she saw huge improvements from the night before.
"We stayed right with Worland the entire match," she said, "although we weren't able to pull off a win, we are making steps in the right direction."
Hill said their serve/receive improved as they made adjustment in the back row and on defense.
"Again, we hit in the positives when we were in-system and had huge contributions from our two middles, Grace Whitt and Lexi Overfield, as well as Reagan Severance on the right side," she said, adding, "Bri DeVries stepped up not only in her setting position but also on defense, getting 21 digs for us."
Whitt led the way in kills with 10, followed by Overfield with six. DeVries dropped 12 digs against the Lady Warriors while Weber added another 10. Rounding out the stats was Severance with three blocks and Whitt with two.
Final scores against the Lady Warriors, while not winners, were much improved over Friday, 23-25, 15-25 and 20-25.
The Lady Cats will be taking on Jackson on Saturday at home, starting with the freshmen at 11 a.m., JV at noon and Varsity at 1 p.m.
Families of players may attend the games along with student body and staff, however, everyone must check in at the front doors before entry. Masks should be worn when six feet of distance isn't possible and everyone is asked to please maintain six feet of distance while seated in the stands.
