Bobcat golfers do well at championships

Five Thermopolis Bobcat golfers joined more than 4,000 high school golfers in Pinehurst, North Carolina last week for the High School National Golf Championships.

Hardy and Hadley Johnson, Will and Jeffry Clark and Seth Weyer competed on multiple courses at the Pinehurst complex over a three-day period, Aug. 3-5.

Individually, the boys did well with Hardy Johnson ranking in the top 200 of the golfers in attendance, having a three-day average 72.

Brother Hadley Johnson had a three-day average 90, followed by Jeffry Clark with a 96.5, Will Clark with a 102 average and Seth Weyer rounded out the team with a 118.

A total of 576 teams from across the U.S. and Canada competed, including 25 teams from various high schools in Wyoming.

The National Championship is by invitation only, and with the Bobcats having won the State Championship this year, they were automatically invited to attend the prestigious event.

Pinehurst has a total of nine courses for members. Membership to the Pinehurst Club costs between $50,000 and $150,00 per year. The boys played on three different courses, Pinehurst #8, #9 and #6.

Pinehurst #6 and #8 were both designed by Tom Fazio, one of the premier designers of courses across the country, with more than 120, and more courses ranked among the top 100 in the U.S.

Pinehurst #9 was designed by the master, Jack Nicklaus.

The parents who traveled with the boys should get some recognition, too, as they followed their golfers throughout their play. Each of the courses is about a 10-mile walk so they not only got to enjoy their sons playing on professionally designed courses, they got a 30-mile hike over the three days.
