On the Record policy

It is the Thermopolis Independent Record’s policy that all people arrested or cited under the “Accidents,” “Sheriff’s office” or “Police department” in the On the Record section are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. We print the names of all people upon their initial arrest.

Sheriff office

Monday, June 8

4:14 p.m. A deputy was requested to do a check on a vehicle for the Department of Family Services.

9:44 p.m. A deputy observed a vehicle being driven over the speed limit with radar confirmation.

The deputy observed the driver making weird body movements while he was talking with her. He ran a standard field sobriety test, which the driver failed. The deputy asked the driver if a urinalysis was done would it come back as hot. According to the report, the driver admitted to using marijuana.

Kristy L. Samples, 48, was arrested for allegedly driving while under the influence of marijuana, possession of marijuana and no vehicle insurance.

A Highway Patrol Drug Recognition Expert was involved in the investigation.

Tuesday, June 9

2:26 p.m. Report of a runaway juvenile. The juvenile was later contacted in Montana on a regular traffic stop. The Montana State Patrol held the juvenile until the parents arrived.  

10:21 p.m. A homeowner observed a subject walking down the alley and was concerned they had been on their property. A deputy checked their property and the neighbor’s property and found nothing. They were advised to call 911 should this occur again.

Wednesday, June 10

10:38 a.m. A request from a citizen regarding access to their property that had been removed. The deputy advised them this was a civil issue and were given information on how to proceed. 

2:22 p.m. Request for an ambulance. A deputy assisted.

6:54 p.m. Deputy assisted with a medical lift for a subject in East Thermopolis.

Thursday, June 11

12:39 p.m. Report of damage done to mailboxes. The matter is under investigation.

Friday, June 12

Unknown time, Nathan D Andrew, 21, of Morrill, Neb., was arrested for alleged failure to register as a sex offender. He was brought in by Wyoming Highway Patrol and listed as non compliant in Nebraska. 

9:11 p.m. A homeowner in the Buffalo Creek area reportedly heard a shooting late at night. A deputy could not locate anyone suspicious. It was possible fireworks.

Saturday, June 13

9:01 a.m. Report of a citizen dispute that is under investigation regarding a dog.

12:32 p.m. Deputy assisted with a medical lift.

3:15 p.m. Report of an alarm at a private home. Before the deputy arrived, the owner said to please disregard.

4:14 p.m. A subject reported they lost something out of a vehicle on Highway 120. The deputy went to the Park County line and could not locate their property.

7:01 p.m. Report of an incident where road access was blocked.

Monday, June 8

6:29 a.m. Report of a hit and run with mirror to mirror contact. The suspect vehicle has not been found.

6:16 p.m. An officer assisted the ambulance in the transport of a patient to the hospital.

9:23 p.m. Travis Allen Winger, 32, was arrested for alleged driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Tuesday, June 9

12:15 a.m. A 19-year-old male of Lander was cited for the possession of marijuana.

8:01 a.m. A cell phone was found and the owner was located.

Wednesday, June 10

12:03 p.m. A subject reported they felt some items were being removed from their property. Officer found no one was there and that nothing was missing.

4:22 p.m. Report of a suspicious vehicle parked on private property. They located the owner, who removed the vehicle.

6:09 p.m. Report of juveniles involved in a minors in possession of alcohol incident. One juvenile received a citation.

Thursday, June 11

8:30 a.m. Report of a request for extra patrol at a residence.

4:00 p.m. A subject on a four wheeler was reported on a hiking trail. The officer contacted the subject and found they were from Weed and Pest and were spraying weeds.

4:34 An officer performed a funeral escort.

10:53 p.m. A 55-year-old woman of Florida was cited for possession of marijuana.

Friday, June 12

7:06 p.m. Report of harassment. The parties were contacted and told to leave each other alone.

Saturday, June 13

1:00 a.m. Marty S. Custer, 26, was arrested on a Hot Springs County warrant in Big Horn County.

2:13 a.m. Report of a suspicious individual coming through town and sleeping on a cot in the middle of a parking lot. The officer visited with the subject and he exited the next day.

7:13 a.m. A wallet was found and returned to its owner.

10:44 a.m. Report of a found driver license. The owner is being contacted.

12:44 p.m. Report of someone concerned about a suspicious individual outside the swimming pool. He was waiting for his family while they were swimming.

8:32 p.m. Gregory Benjiman Lea, 33, was arrested for alleged possession of marijuana and criminal trespass.

10:10 p.m. A subject reported they lost their keys. None have been turned in to the Law Enforcement Center.

Sunday, June 14

9:54 a.m. A citizen assist was requested at an apartment complex in East Thermopolis.

12:36 p.m. Report of a verbal family fight. The subjects separated for the night.

1:18 p.m. Report of vandalism. Officers are working with another agency as this is under investigation.

2:48 p.m. A suspicious subject reportedly walked up to someone’s door.

6:07 p.m. An officer assisted the ambulance in the transport of the patient to the hospital.

8:41 p.m. Suspicious person reportedly seen down by the river. The officer made contact and they were fine and left.

Bentley Root was born Friday, May 29, 2020, at Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital to Kari Hall and Matthew Root.

He weighed 5 pounds, 3 ounces, and was 18.75 inches long.
