Thermopolis Middle School's Lights On Destination Imagination students spent last Saturday in Casper, competing in the Destination Imagination state competition.
The competition was held at CY Middle School with the two Thermopolis teams, Improv and Fine Arts, taking first place. Not only did they place first in the instant challenge, they also placed first in their central challenge.
Those wins put them in first place overall in both categories and qualified them for the global competition, which will be held in Kansas City, Missouri in May. This is the first time Lights On has had two teams qualify for global competition at the same time.
"Destination Imagination is an amazing opportunity for students to excel in their education by shaping their own futures as leaders and innovators," said coach Julia Scott. "The skills they learn during the challenge, such as creativity, critical thinking, communication and teamwork will assist them for the rest of their lives. I am so fortunate to have been able to coach and manage them."
High school senior Katie Burrows, a former Destination Imagination participant assisted Scott with coaching the two teams. Both Burrows and another senior, Ashley Brawley, were recognized during the closing ceremony for their past participation in the program and Burrows was awarded a Destination Imagination scholarship.
Rachel Johnson served as the team appraiser during their preparations for the event.
