Excited for spring

“Spring has sprung, the grass is riz, I wonder where them flowers is?” – Grandma

I may be just the teensiest bit early to quote my grandmother as it’s just the first week in March, but I’m already looking at seed catalogs and planning the layout for my garden.

I’m truly not the greatest at getting things to grow, but I’m going to keep trying until I get it just right.

Disappointment for my spring flowers started early, with me ordering bulbs to plant this fall. They arrived and three days later, before I could get them in the ground, we had snow. Unfortunately, the area I wanted to plant them is still covered in snow, so my tulips will be sparse this spring.

Don’t get me wrong I can grow sunflowers like nobody’s business. Of course they don’t require a whole lot of care and they reseed themselves, so I’ll have their sunny faces at some point.

I planted daylilies last year and they did struggle throughout the summer, but they didn’t die, so there’s still hope they’ll make an appearance, too. The Asian lilies were growing well too when the snow hit and I actually had a few flowers.

So while I’m making my grandiose plans for this year’s garden I’m looking more toward the “easy to grow” stuff and avoiding poppies that need to be babied. Let’s face it I don’t have time to pamper myself, much less a needy plant.

I’ll be dipping my toes into vegetable gardening this year, too. I’ve been watching videos on how to make my own seed tapes and when to plant what. While I won’t starve if they don’t grow, I do hope to get things like carrots, beans and potatoes for my efforts.

For now I’ll continue to peruse and plan, keeping my eye out for those first few shoots of spring grass.
